Does Biliary Sludge Require Surgery?

Biliary sludge is the accumulation of micro-crystals from concentrated bile. It is asymptomatic in most patients but can cause stone-like attacks in some.

Observation or surgery?

Observation is sufficient for most asymptomatic patients.

When is surgery considered?

  • Recurrent attacks
  • History of pancreatitis
  • Coexisting risk factors
