Laparoscopic vs Open Gallbladder Surgery
Gallbladder removal is performed laparoscopically worldwide. Open surgery is needed only in certain clinical situations. Knowing the differences makes the process more predictable for patients.
Laparoscopic
- Small incisions, camera and instruments
- Less pain, faster recovery
- Usually one overnight stay
- Cosmetic advantage
Open
- Single larger incision
- Preferred when there are dense adhesions, advanced inflammation or complications
- Longer recovery time
Which technique for whom?
Most patients benefit from the laparoscopic approach. Advanced cholecystitis, Mirizzi syndrome, dense adhesions or suspected gallbladder cancer may require open surgery. In some cases a laparoscopic operation is safely converted to open.
Recovery differences
Return to work is usually 1-2 weeks for laparoscopic cases and 3-4 weeks for open surgery.
