Liver Hemangioma: Does It Need Surgery?
A liver hemangioma is a benign vascular mass. It is usually found incidentally on imaging and most patients have no symptoms. Treatment depends on size, symptoms and imaging features.
Diagnosis
Ultrasound is the first step. With typical features, contrast-enhanced MRI or CT confirms the diagnosis; biopsy is usually not required.
Watch or operate?
- Small, asymptomatic hemangiomas are observed
- Surgery is considered for rapid growth, pressure symptoms or diagnostic uncertainty
- Very large (often >5-10 cm) symptomatic lesions may be resected
Lifestyle
No specific dietary restriction is required; pregnancy and hormonal therapy should be discussed individually.
