When Is Gallstone Surgery Needed?
Not every patient with gallstones needs immediate surgery. The decision is shaped by symptom frequency, prior attacks, the risk of complications and coexisting conditions.
Situations that favour surgery
- Recurrent biliary colic
- Previous cholecystitis
- Previous gallstone pancreatitis
- High-risk polyp
- Suspicious ultrasound findings
Timing of surgery
In some cases early surgery is preferred, in others surgery is planned after the inflammation has cooled down.
How is the decision reached?
Examination, ultrasound, blood tests and an assessment of any coexisting conditions guide planning.
