Can Jaundice Be Caused by a Bile Duct Stone?
Jaundice is not a disease in itself but a common sign of many liver and biliary diseases. From a general-surgery perspective, mechanical obstruction of the bile duct is especially important.
How does a bile duct stone cause jaundice?
The stone blocks the main bile duct, preventing bilirubin from reaching the intestine. Blood bilirubin rises and jaundice appears.
Which symptoms typically accompany it?
- Dark urine
- Pale stools
- Abdominal pain
- Fever
Diagnostic pathway
Blood tests, ultrasound and MRCP are the main tools.
Treatment
Most often the stone is removed first by ERCP, followed by laparoscopic gallbladder surgery in suitable patients.
